Hands

Dylan McBurney Wedding Photographer Contact Sheet Dublin wedding

The silent language of hands!

Our hands often reveal what we really think but do not say.
They can show a range of feelings and emotions from confusion and frustration
to joy, understanding, love, and compassion.

Hands can tell you a lot about how much people care for each other. The position of peoples hands is a great signal for me as a photographer. For example, you can be watching a scene unfold in front of you and all of a sudden someones hands move in a certain way. And, ‘click’ there’s the picture. It could be the outstretched arm or gesture that someone makes. It can also be the tender caress of a cheek as in this picture.

I could have spoken about any five of the images highlighted in the contact sheet above as they all have an element of ‘hands’ in them that really ‘make’ the picture. Consider how in frame 20 you can see the bride kissing the groom’s hand for example. Or in the last of the five (frame 24) how the groom’s friend (who has come over to share a joke with him) has punched the air.

I love these moments in photography as they help to tell the story of the moment.
